Today's lesson


Awareness: the state or ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious of events, objective, or sensory patterns. In this level of consciousness, sense data can be confirmed by an observer without necessary implying understanding.

I experienced a lesson in awareness today. My love and I went on a beautiful hike today in Nevada City, CA in search of mushrooms. The recent snow has melted but the dampness has lingered creating a decomposing paradise for the fungi! Or so I thought... I have been so used to spotting mushrooms popping out of the pine needles so when I didn't see them I got angry and discouraged. This created a highly negative climate. When I became aware of my attitude and shaped up, I was okay that I had to try harder to find the littlest fungus specimens. My present state of consciousness prevailed and made for a better experience. I was looking up and around rather than at the ground. At times it's difficult to be aware and easy to be caught up in the moment, but experiencing the senses and the now is so much better!

Just when the dry, last days of autumn are among us, SNOW happens! It was beautiful watching it from my window.

Her strength is inspiring... especially in her core!
Right now, I'm trying very hard to work on mine and I find myself compromising this area quite often. My focus drifts away and suddenly I'll come back to my abdominal region and try hard to remember how important it is to build strength there. Keeping a strong core is symbiotic with the lower back. If you're experiencing weakness in the lumbar spine and want to tighten your core, try working on your Cobra Pose!

In Cobra Pose, Bhujangasana, be mindful of:
  • Keeping your core engaged
  • Move shoulder blades back and down the spine
  • Neck neutrally positioned- look forward
  • Soften your glutes
  • Press down through the tops of your feet
  • Don't worry about coming up high
  • BREATHE and repeat
